Amanda Doremus– Scientist in Training, KCI Technologies, Inc.
Amanda joined the DEAWRA 4 years ago as a member of the University of Delaware student chapter, and served as Secretary and as President of the UD student chapter. Along with the rest of the Executive Board, Amanda planned several successful student chapter events including its annual Winter in the Watershed networking event and Career Night. She has experience coordinating with several members of the state chapter to plan these events. During her term as President the group achieved recognition for the outstanding student chapter award from national AWRA. Since graduating she has become more involved in DEAWRA state chapter activities, including being a part of the Website Committee. She has also attended several AWRA conferences at both the national and local level.
Amanda graduated with a B.S. in Environmental Science (with a concentration in Hydrology) and a M.S. in Geography from the University of Delaware. Currently, she is a field scientist at KCI. She works to map DelDOT’s stormwater drainage throughout the state as part of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit Program. As a recent graduate and young professional she brings valuable experience and new ideas to the DEAWRA.
Juni Shahjabin Alam - Project Manager, Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. (GPI)
Ms. Juni Alam is a Professional Engineer with over 10 years of experience in engineering consulting. She is currently a Project Manager in the Civil Engineering Group with Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. (GPI). She has been working in their Delaware office for one and a half years now, and had previously worked for over 3 years in their Maryland office. She has extensive experience in water resources engineering, including stormwater management and stream restoration and has worked on various design projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Her design experience includes but is not limited to NPDES compliance, green infrastructure design, bioengineering and natural stream channel designs, soil erosion and sediment control design, pollutant loading analysis, wetland mitigation design, hydraulic and hydrologic modeling, and cost estimation.
She holds a Bachelors of Science Degree in Civil Engineering and a Masters of Science Degree in Environmental Engineering. Ms. Alam attended Universities in Pittsburgh, Jordan, and England. She is a well-travelled engineer with Professional Engineering licenses in Maryland, New Jersey, and Delaware.
Ms. Alam has been a member of DEAWRA since 2016 and has been involved with their Events Planning Committee, helping to organize the first annual ‘DEAWRA Friends and Family’ Event. She had also been a member of the NJ AWRA from 2006-2011, where she was actively involved in their Events Planning Committee as well. Most recently, she has been elected onto the Board for the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary.
Kate Hutelmyer – Watersheds Program Manager, Partnership for the Delaware Estuary
Kate Hutelmyer joined the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary as the Watersheds Program Manager in 2016. In this role she leads collaborative efforts to improve water quality in communities throughout Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Previously, Kate worked for the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association as the Program Coordinator for its Watershed Institute, which provides technical and financial assistance to New Jersey's environmental nonprofits. Kate holds a Master’s Degree in Water Science and Policy and a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, both from the University of Delaware.
Kate began her involvement with the DEAWRA in 2011 through the UD Student Chapter of the AWRA. She served as Vice President of the student chapter for two years, helping to coordinate the first annual Winter in the Watershed and the chapter's participation in the 2012 EPA Rain Works Challenge.
Alex Schmidt – Associate Vice President, Century Engineering
Ever since I was a young child I knew that I would be involved in an environmental field. Growing up in rural Pennsylvania most of my time was spent fishing and playing in and around a pond and stream on my parent’s property. Between building dams in the stream, a dock in the pond, and later helping a neighbor with his permitting to replace a culvert pipe, I had a pretty good idea of what my career would center around. After graduating with a Bachelors in Engineering from Pennsylvania State University I started work at Century Engineering in the Dover, Delaware office. My experience included stormwater management engineering on DelDOT and private civil projects, open and closed drainage design, erosion and sediment control design, NPDES permit compliance support, environmental resource identification, and numerous other water resource related projects. During the early years of my career I also completed a master’s degree in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering at Villanova University. As I grew my career I also participated in several committees, including ACEC subcommittees and the DNREC Wetland Advisory Council. I have had the good fortune to work on several interesting and unique projects during that time, most recently the development of two Water Quality Improvement Plans for DelDOT and New Castle County. I am now an Associate Vice President at Century Engineering and manage a department that includes our water resources and environmental services. I believe that my experience and understanding of the water resource issues facing Delaware will make me a good choice for board member of DEAWRA.
There are many things happening in Delaware and across the nation that make it more important than ever to step up and raise awareness of water resource issues. If selected, my goals during my term will be to assist DEAWRA with: growing professional and political recognition; exploring opportunities and partnerships between DEAWRA and other engineering associations; and expanding the membership of DEAWRA.
